Help to Stop Smoking

There are many products on the market today claiming to help stop smoking. The question is do any of them work? Studies show that there is moderate success to be found in wearing the stop smoking patch. While they are quite expensive, their effectiveness has been proven in lessening the craving for nicotine in a safe way.

Nasal sprays and nicotine inhalers are also available and should be considered after researching the use of these items. Both are available by prescription. The nasal spray is not for everyone. Those who are seeking to help stop smoking by nasal application will need to be allergy and asthma free, as these conditions affect the delivery of the nicotine in the nasal passage. The nicotine inhaler works by delivering the nicotine directly into the lungs, thus hitting the bloodstream in a quicker manner and in a larger dose.

Perhaps the medications that claim to aid in quitting are the way for you to become an ex smoker. There are drugs that were originally meant to treat depression that have shown some promise in assisting us, and can help you stop smoking. These same drugs produce the same action as nicotine on the brain by increasing certain chemicals, making us feel good and helping us to focus. Also, these medications can lessen the withdrawal symptoms, giving you the edge you need to overcome this serious addiction.

Something a bit newer on the scene to help stop smoking is Nicotine Anonymous. Following the same 12 step plan as Alcohol Anonymous, these groups are popping up all over the country and on online. These groups acknowledge the difficulty in stopping smoking, and then remain free of the addiction. They are happy to introduce new members to the twelve step program, and encourage that the new member have sponsorship. To help you along the way, they promote education and awareness of the risk factors, both physical and emotional, associated with smoking and all of its consequences. Members believe that in order to stay nicotine free, they must keep themselves as physically and emotionally healthy as possible at all times.

There is a religious undertone to these help stop smoking groups. If you are comfortable with a higher power then you will probably be open to the steps and expectations of the group. Some groups do frown on using any sort of aid to quit smoking, while other groups do not. The program is free and does offer a great support system. If you have been involved with other twelve step programs then you are likely to do well with this one also. If you are in touch with your spirituality or wish to become more in tune with your spiritual nature while beating the addiction, this may be the way for you!
